MASS Microsystems Introduces New Line of 88MB Removable Cartridge Drives
Sunnyvale, Calif. -- MASS Microsystems™ Inc. (NASDAQ: MMIC) today announced a
new line of removable cartridge drives for Macintosh computers, the DataPak 88.
The DataPak 88 models, which are higher capacity versions of their
award-winning line of DataPak 45MB drives, will provide 88 megabytes of storage
on a single removable cartridge. The new drives will be capable of reading
existing 45MB cartridges, and will be available in five configurations that
include two dual drive models and three different footprints to ergonomically
match to the various Macintosh computers.
The new DataPak 88MB removable cartridge drive systems have a 20 ms average
access time, 1:1 interleaving, and a 32K buffer which combine to give
comparable performance to that of a standard fixed drive. Other features
include an external fuse, auto-park and lock heads, external SCSI switches, two
switchable AC outlets, and external termination. The new DataPak 88 drives
will also feature a new platinum-colored front bezel.
PadLok™ volume partitioning software is also included, which offers users
password protection and security from a global crash. Additionally,
DiskDoubler™, the popular file compression utility, will ship with all drives,
based on an earlier agreement with Salient™ Software Inc. that gives MASS
Microsystems exclusive rights to distribute the DiskDoubler program with their
removable drive products.
The DataPak 88 models use proprietary removable hard disk technology that ha
already become a standard in the industry. MASS Microsystems, the earliest
major supplier of of this technology with the introduction of the DataPak in
early 1988, continues to be the leading manufacturer in the Macintosh market.
The DataPak is the only removable drive to win four major industry awards for
outstanding quality and performance, including the MacWorld World Class award
the past two years.
"MASS Microsystems has a commitment to leading edge removable storage
technology. With the new DataPak 88 family we can continue to provide a high
quality, cost effective storage solution to meet the ever expanding storage
needs of Macintosh users," said Ms. Gina Centoni, Storage Product Manager.
The DataPak 88 drives are backed with a two year warranty and 800 technical
support hotline. Although final pricing and availability have not been
determined, the single drive DataPak 88 models are expected to have a U.S.
suggested retail price under $2000, with limited availability starting in
March. DataCart™ 88MB cartridges will retail below $200.
